Medi-Cal, Refugees, and Refugee Health Assessment

Medi-Cal, Refugees, and Refugee Health Assessment

Medi-Cal is a healthcare for low or no income families and individuals. Refugees as identified in 24D-2 are Qualified Aliens under this legislation and are eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal if they meet all eligibility requirements.

In the United States, medical care is expensive and paid for through medical insurance, which is needed to access medical care. Refugees are guaranteed 12 months of free government-funded medical insurance, called Medi-Cal in California. For people above a certain income level, health insurance can also be bought through Covered California or provided through employer insurance.
Newly arrived refugees are eligible for a free Refugee Health Assessment, which is a medical exam focused on preventing, screening, and treating communicable diseases and provides linkage to primary care.
Alameda County's Refugee Health Assessment Program (RHAP) is located at Eastmont Wellness in East Oakland, part of Alameda Health System. You can refer yourself or someone else to Eastmont Wellness at: rhapreferrals@alamedahealthsystem.org. For more information on the RHAP, please go to the Office of Refugee Health website.
